Dental Assessment of Functional and Airway Disorders in the Developing Child
Presentation of functional disorders related to tethered oral tissues, and upper airway dysfunction on facial growth and development will be presented through lecture and case presentations. Hands-on skills for the assessment of tethered oral tissues and signs of upper airway disorders will be demonstrated and practiced by class participants.

DahmDr. Dahm is a 1991 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry who completed an AEGD residency at the University of North Carolina in 1992. He has completed curriculum with the Dawson institute and studied TMD with the Piper clinics in St. Petersburg, FL. His general practice is focused on airway management and facial growth and development utilizing functional orthodontics and other modalities in patient care. Dr. Dahm has authored articles for the Journal of the American Orthodontic Society, is a Diplomate of the AOS and current Vice President of the AOS. He is the founder of the Iowa Center for Orofacial Health and Development, devoted to the treatment of tethered oral tissues, TMD and Sleep disorders.

Course Topics:

• Upper airway dysfunction.

• Tethered oral tissues (tongue and lip ties).

• Identification of sleep breathing disorders in children.

• Management of the developing child suffering from functional and airway disorders.

Learning Objectives: 1. Assess tethered oral tissues in infants, developing children and adults. 2. Develop a decision matrix for addressing tethered oral tissues. 3. Understand the effects of upper airway obstruction on facial growth and development. 4. Understand the effects of upper airway obstruction on dental growth and development.
